How to convert an Indian CV for Ireland

Last updated August 2026 · Written by the HappyHire team

Short answer

Remove the photograph, date of birth, marital status and any declaration block — all standard in India, all a liability in Ireland. Then cut it to the length Ireland expects: Two pages, same as the UK. After that, do the three things that actually decide whether you are shortlisted: state your grade alongside its Irish equivalent, add a six-word descriptor after every employer an Irish recruiter would not recognise, and put your English evidence somewhere visible. Most rejections at this stage are not judgements about your experience — they are a recruiter failing to interpret it.

What to take off an Indian CV

None of the conventions below are mistakes. They are correct in India and they are what an Indian recruiter expects to see. The problem is that in Ireland they are either unlawful for an employer to consider or simply illegible — and an illegible CV gets set aside without anyone deciding against you.

  • Photograph
  • Date of birth, age, gender and marital status
  • Father's or husband's name
  • The declaration block and signature at the end — standard in India, and read abroad as either a legal misunderstanding or a template nobody edited
  • 'Career Objective' — replaced everywhere on this list by a targeted professional summary
  • Full residential address, caste, religion and passport number

The photograph is the one to take seriously. Irish employers routinely discard CVs carrying a photo to protect themselves against discrimination claims — the rejection is procedural and you will never be told it happened.

What Irish recruiters expect instead

Ireland follows UK naming and formatting almost exactly — a CV, two pages, no photo. The meaningful differences are immigration and employer mix, not document style.

  • A short profile tuned to the advert
  • Work-authorisation status — EU/EEA citizenship, if you hold it, is worth stating in the first lines because it removes the permit question entirely
  • Language skills, which carry unusual weight given the volume of multilingual shared-service and support roles
  • Quantified achievements over duty lists

Making your grades legible

Indian results come as a percentage or a CGPA out of 10, neither of which a British, Irish or Australian recruiter can interpret — and 68% reads as mediocre to someone who does not know that Indian marking runs far harsher than Western marking. State the raw result and the equivalence together: 'B.Tech, 72% — equivalent to a UK First Class'. For the US and Canada, converting to a 4.0 GPA is the readable form.

This matters more than it sounds. A recruiter spending eight seconds on your CV will not stop to research a foreign grading scale — they will form an impression from the number in front of them and move on. Stating the raw result and its equivalence in the same line costs you six words and removes the guess entirely.

Getting your qualifications recognised

Indian degrees are widely recognised, but recognition is not the same as legibility. For the UK, UK ENIC issues statements of comparability; for the US and Canada, WES and similar services produce the credential evaluations employers and licensing bodies expect. For regulated professions — accounting, engineering, nursing, medicine — start this before you start applying, because it sets the timeline for everything else.

Start this before you start applying, not after you get an offer. Recognition and attestation run in months, and a candidate who cannot evidence their qualification when asked loses the offer to someone who can.

Making your employers legible

TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL and the large banks need no introduction. Almost everything else does. Add a six-word descriptor in brackets after any employer a foreign recruiter would not recognise — '(₹400cr logistics firm, 1,200 staff)' — because a recruiter who cannot size your employer cannot size your experience, and defaults to assuming it was small.

The failure mode is invisible: an Irish recruiter who cannot size your employer does not investigate, they assume it was small, and your CV quietly loses to a candidate whose last job was at a company they had heard of. Six words in brackets after the employer name is the entire fix.

Your name on the application

South Indian naming often places an initial before the given name, standing for a father's name or a village. Application forms and ATS parsers abroad expect a first name and a last name and will mangle anything else, so decide on one consistent first-name and surname pair and use it identically on your CV, your applications, your LinkedIn and your right-to-work documents. Mismatches between them cause real problems at offer stage.

Consistency is the actual requirement. Your CV, your LinkedIn, your application forms and your right-to-work documents must all carry the same name in the same order, because a mismatch surfaces at exactly the worst moment — the pre-employment check after you have already resigned from your current job.

Proving your English

English-medium education is common and worth stating explicitly as a line on the CV, because recruiters cannot infer it. Where a visa or a professional body requires a test, IELTS or PTE Academic is the usual evidence; some UK universities and employers waive it for English-medium degrees, but the waiver has to be claimed rather than assumed.

Whatever your actual level, put the evidence where it can be seen. Recruiters are pattern-matching under time pressure and will resolve an unanswered question in the direction that costs them least, which is not you.

The gap that is not a gap

Indian CVs commonly run to three or four pages with extensive academic detail going back to Class 10. Abroad, secondary school results belong on the CV only if you graduated within the last two or three years, and everything before your degree can usually go.

Unexplained gaps are read as trouble by default. Explained ones are read as context. The difference is one line.

Work authorisation in Ireland

Ireland is an EU member, so EU/EEA and Swiss citizens need no permit — say so immediately if it applies. For everyone else, employment permits are occupation-led, and the Critical Skills list is the single most useful document to read before you decide what to apply for. Some permits require the employer to run a Labour Market Needs Test first, which lengthens the process.

RouteWhat it means for you
Critical Skills Employment PermitFor occupations on the critical skills list. Faster, no labour market needs test, and a route toward long-term residence.
General Employment PermitFor roles outside the critical skills list. Usually requires the employer to advertise locally first.
Third Level Graduate Programme (Stamp 1G)Post-study permission for graduates of Irish institutions to seek work without a permit.
EU/EEA and Swiss citizenshipNo permit required. If you hold it, it is the single strongest line on your CV.

What to lead with

Converting a CV is mostly subtraction, which can leave people feeling they have been asked to erase where they came from. They have not. These are genuine advantages Indian candidates bring, and they belong at the top of the document rather than buried:

  • Scale — Indian professionals routinely operate at volumes that impress Western hiring managers, and stating the numbers makes the point without any need to claim it
  • Genuine multi-timezone working experience, which is a direct qualification for distributed roles
  • Strong quantitative and engineering education, particularly from the IITs, NITs and BITS, which do carry recognition abroad and are worth naming

Annual gross in euro. Ranges are increasingly published, and recruiters ask expectations early. Dublin salaries carry a significant premium over the rest of the country, and so does Dublin rent — factor both.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put a photo on my CV for Ireland?

No. Irish employers routinely discard CVs carrying a photo to limit their exposure to discrimination claims, and many applicant tracking systems handle them badly. This is true even though a photo is standard practice in India.

Is it called a CV or a resume in Ireland?

Ireland follows UK naming and formatting almost exactly — a CV, two pages, no photo. The meaningful differences are immigration and employer mix, not document style.

How do I explain Indian grades to an Irish employer?

Indian results come as a percentage or a CGPA out of 10, neither of which a British, Irish or Australian recruiter can interpret — and 68% reads as mediocre to someone who does not know that Indian marking runs far harsher than Western marking. State the raw result and the equivalence together: 'B.Tech, 72% — equivalent to a UK First Class'. For the US and Canada, converting to a 4.0 GPA is the readable form.

How long should my CV be for Ireland?

Two pages, same as the UK. This is often shorter than the Indian convention, and the compression is not optional — length signals an inability to prioritise rather than a depth of experience.

Do I need my qualifications formally assessed?

Indian degrees are widely recognised, but recognition is not the same as legibility. For the UK, UK ENIC issues statements of comparability; for the US and Canada, WES and similar services produce the credential evaluations employers and licensing bodies expect. For regulated professions — accounting, engineering, nursing, medicine — start this before you start applying, because it sets the timeline for everything else.

Will employers in Ireland sponsor a visa for an Indian candidate?

Ireland is an EU member, so EU/EEA and Swiss citizens need no permit — say so immediately if it applies. For everyone else, employment permits are occupation-led, and the Critical Skills list is the single most useful document to read before you decide what to apply for. Some permits require the employer to run a Labour Market Needs Test first, which lengthens the process. The routes worth knowing by name are Critical Skills Employment Permit, General Employment Permit, Third Level Graduate Programme (Stamp 1G), EU/EEA and Swiss citizenship.
